FURNIVAL'S VITRIFIED Made in England As the Paras were only formed in WW2 these pieces date sometime after that conflict..
Type: Vitrified Colours: White, with blue and grey insignia
Research suggests that these pieces were made as a commemoration of a battle honour, achieved (by possibly the DLI) during the Boer War. The blue crest is that of the Parachute Regiment, while the grey crest bears the inscription: South Africa, 1900-1902. The mark above the inscription is a bit of a mystery. It certainly resembles that of the Durham Light Infantry. However, this usually bears DLI in the centre, not IX. Maybe this signifies a 9th battalion, or similar? The other mystery is why two different units are on one piece of pottery. We would love to hear from anyone who may be able to shed more light on this, please!
