Jacob & Thomas Furnival
Stafford Street Pottery Works, Hanley - a partnership between Jacob and Thomas Furnival. Pieces should date to between 1842 and December 1843 In Godden's Guide to Ironstone (1999), he states that, "Ironstone-type stone china made by this firm bears the Royal Arms device with the initials 'J. & T. F.' ". |
According to Petra Williams in 'Flow Blue China, Book 1', page 30, the quite elaborate mark on this Indian Jar pattern also dates to this period in the company's history. This seems likely, as the design was also made by the company of Thomas Furnival & Co., c.1844, immediately following the dissolution of Jacob & Thomas Furnival, and bears a very similar mark, as shown in the image on the right hand side:
|
The mark on the left comes from a piece which we believe dates from the time of Jacob Furnival & Co. (1845 - 1870) You will see that this bears the initials "J.F.".
The piece on the right also bears the initials, "J.F.". However, the addition of FURNIVALS suggests that this piece could date from the later company of "Furnivals" (1890 - 1895). Nevertheless, a piece bearing the phrase, "Made in England" cannot date before 1910, at which time the piece would usually be marked Furnivals Ltd. |
This is the period during which we have to start being extremely cautious about dating the pottery. The name "Furnivals" was used frequently at later dates - sometimes the Ltd was omitted from Furnivals Limited pieces and from Furnivals (1913) Ltd. pieces. Also, sometimes the word "Furnivals" was used by the Masons factory, during the latter part of the 20th century.
Occasionally, "Furnivals" pieces will be found bearing the Viking Ship mark. It seems unlikely that these dated from this period and are probably much later - again, possibly, from the Masons factory. If a piece looks newer than its mark suggests ... it probably is! |
