Here we can see a modified backstamp marked
LS & S England with the reg no. and an impressed FURNIVAL mark. Who LS&S were was a mystery, we looked them up in Goddens Encyclopaedia of Pottery Marks and he says "These initials appear on garter marks of the period c 1870 - 80. I have been unable to match the initials to a manufacturer." Well this set me on a hunt. I've discovered that LS&S was a US company called Lazarus Straus and Sons, founded in 1865. They had showrooms in New York, London, Paris, Berlin & Yokohama. They commisioned pieces from the likes of Wedgewood, Minton, Webb (glassware) and Limoges in France plus others in Austria AND Furnivals. |
